The resulting solution is stirred for 5 days after which the reaction mixture is filtered to give 39 g (24percent yield) of 7-hydroxy-5-oxo-l,2,3,5-tetrahydro-indolizine-8- carboxylic acid ethyl ester as a white solid. The NMR spectrum of the title compound is consistent with the structure.1H NMR (CDCI3, 300 MHZ): delta 11.4 (s, 1H), 5.80 (s, 1H), 4.40 (q, 2H), 4. 15 (t, 2H), 3.50 (t, 2H), 2.3-2.15 (m, 2H), 1.40 (t, 3H).
