Highly Proton Conductive Sulfonyl Imide Based Polymer Blended from Poly(arylene ether sulfone) and Parmax-1200 for Fuel Cells

Thermally and chemically stable, sulfonyl imide-based polymer blends have been prepared from sulfonimide poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SI-PAES) and sulfonimide Parmax-1200 (SI-Parmax-1200) using the solvent casting method. Initially, sulfonimide poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SI-PAES) polymers have typically been synthesized via direct polymerization of bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulfonyl imide (SI-DCDPS) and bis(4-fluorophenyl) sulfone (DFDPS) with bisphenol A (BPA). Subsequently, SI-Parmax-1200 has been synthesized via post-modification of the existing Parmax-1200 polymer followed by sulfonation and imidization. The SI-PAES/SI-Parmax-1200 blend membranes show high ion exchange capacity ranging from 1.65 to 1.97 meq/g, water uptake ranging from 22.8 to 65.4% and proton conductivity from 25,9 to 78.5 mS/cm. Markedly, the SI-PAES-40/SI-Parmax-1200 membrane (blended-40) exhibits the highest proton conductivity (78.5 mS/cm), which is almost similar to Nafion 117 (R) (84.73 mS/cm). The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fenton’s test confirm the excellent thermal and chemical stability of the synthetic polymer blends. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study shows a distinct phase separation at the hydrophobic/hydrophilic segments, which facilitate proton conduction throughout the ionic channel of the blend polymers. Therefore, the synthetic polymer blends represent an alternative to Nafion 117 (R) as proton exchangers for fuel cells.

Co-pyrolysis of textile dyeing sludge and red wood waste in a continuously operated auger reactor under microwave irradiation

The eco-friendly disposal of textile dyeing sludge (TDS) has become a worldwide environmental issue due to their complexity and toxicity. In this study, co-pyrolysis of TDS and red wood waste (RWW) in a continuously operated auger reactor under microwave irradiation was investigated, which was more environmentally friendly and created higher value added products. Effects of pyrolysis temperature and RWW ratio were studied to evaluate product distribution and properties. Increase of temperature and RWW ratio resulted in decrease in char yield and increase in gas yield. The contents of CO, CH4, and H-2 increased significantly with RWW ratio increased at 650 degrees C. The content of pyridines, amines, and nitriles enhanced sharply with increasing temperature from 450 to 750 degrees C. Co-pyrolysis promoted the Maillard reaction and cracking of nitrogen-containing pigments, forming large quantities of N-heterocyclics in bio-oil. Sludge char obtained by pyrolysis of TDS at 650 degrees C had a greater sulfur retention ability than chars from co-pyrolysis. The highest methylene blue number (372.25 mg/g) and iodine adsorption value (332.42 mg/g) were achieved from TDS and biochar (750 degrees C, 30 wt% RWW ratio), respectively. In Situ Generated TEMPO Oxoammonium Salt Mediated Tandem Cyclization of beta-Oxoamides with Amine Hydrochlorides for the Synthesis of Pyrrolin-4-ones

A novel in situ generated TEMPO oxoammonium salt inediated one-pot tandem reaction has been developed for the straightforward construction of pyrrolin-4-ones from readily available beta-oxoamides with amine hydrochlorides. The reaction tolerates various functional groups and represents a reliable method for the synthesis of highly substituted pyrrolin-4-oes in good yields under mild conditions. Detailed mechanistic studies disclosed that TEMPO oxoammonium salt generated in situ was crucial for the transformation involving the formation of enaminone precursors in situ by condensation of the beta-oxoamides with amines, followed by sequential oxidative coupling with beta-oxoamides, intramolecular eyclization and 1,2-alkyl migration steps.

Occurrence and transformation of gabapentin in urban water quality engineering: Rapid formation of nitrile from amine during drinking water chlorination

The occurrence and fate of the popular pharmaceutical gabapentin (GBP) in the urban water cycle were investigated with a focus on its transformation during water chlorination. GBP was detected in all samples with average concentrations of 1285 ng/L (n = 24) for wastewater effluent, 304 ng/L for river water (n = 22), and 180 ng/L for drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) influent (n = 4). The monitoring sites were located in the Nakdong River watershed, Korea. GBP was rapidly (within 20 min) transformed into 1-cyanocyclohexylacetic acid (GBP-nitrile) under typical chlorination conditions (1.4 mgCl(2)/L). When there was a molar excess of chlorine to GBP, the primary amine of GBP was double-chlorinated to form N-Cl-2 GBP with a second-order rate constant of >10(3) M-1 s(-1). Decomposition of N-Cl-2 GBP had a first-order rate constant of (0.5-1.0) x 10(-2) s(-1) and produced GBP-nitrile with a yield of 87%-10 0%. We propose that N-Cl-2 GBP is transformed into N-Cl GBP imine and then to GBP-nitrile via two consecutive dehydrochlorinations with the former as the rate-limiting step. N-Cl-2 GBP had a much higher decom-position rate than N-Cl-2 produced from other simple aliphatic amines, which could be related to the structural features of GBP such as its carboxyl group and quaternary b-carbon. The wastewater effluent samples did not contain GBP-nitrile even in the chlorinated effluent because of the relatively low chlorine dose or high ammonia level. In a full-scale DWTP employing a pre-chlorination unit, GBP present in the influent river water was fully transformed into GBP-nitrile. The formed GBP-nitrile was degraded in subsequent ozonation (*OH oxidation) and biological activated carbon filtration (biodegradation) processes. The toxicity of GBP-nitrile is thought to be low but further studies are warranted to assess the toxicological relevance of nitrile formation during water chlorination. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Separation of Tire Rubber Overlapping Terahertz Spectra Using Non-Negative Matrix Factorization of Spectral Feature Constraints

With the deepening of the concept of green tires, the effective composition of tire rubberis directly related to the qualification of rubber. But tire rubber is a black analysis system for the inspection department, and it’ sexceedingly crucialto accurately detect rubber components by the existing methods. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) technology has been successfully applied to material detection and analysis, but the terahertz spectral data observed from a complex sample of rubber represents the comprehensive results of several interrelated components or interaction of characteristic components in many cases, where as the actual information contained in the raw data may overlap, which will conversely affect the analysis of the components in the rubber mixture. In order to solve the problem of terahertz spectral overlap, the characteristics of continuous smoothing of terahertz spectral matrix and sparse concentration matrix are combined this paper, then the 2 norms with smoothing characteristics and the 1/2 norm with sparsity characteristics into the non-negative matrix factorization method is introduced, which are applied to the separation of terahertz aliased spectra, so as eparation method of terahertz aliasing spectral based on spectral feature Constrained Non-negative Matrix Factorization (CNMF) is proposed. Firstly, nitrile-butadiene rubber combined with vulcanization accelerator 2-Mercaptobenzothizzole(MBT) to form a binary mixture in diverse proportions, and it combined with vulcanization accelerators MBT and tetramethyl thiuram monosulfide (TMTM) to form a ternary mixture in different proportions. Then the terahertz time domain spectrum of all samples ismeasured by terahertz spectroscopy system, which the measured data is subjected too btain a corresponding absorbance spectrum. Further, principal component analysis is performed on the obtained spectral matrix to initially determine the number of components of the mixture. Finally, the Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF), Non-negative Matrix Factorization based on pure variables initialization(PNMF) and CNMF methods are used to the decomposition of the mixture data matrix and spectral analysis of the aliased spectrum. The results show that the separation effect of the CNMF algorithm is better than that of NMF and PNMF method, and the corresponding results of the characteristic absorption peak are accurate. In addition, the correlation coefficients of separation results for different component mixtures are higher than 89%, and the spectral angles are less than 0.5 with a higher reduction degree of purity spectrum. Therefore, the constrained non-negative matrix factorization algorithm is introduced into the separation of terahertz aliasing spectra, which is preferable to extract the characteristic information of single components in complex mixtures and provides a better foundation for the qualitative analysis and quantitative calculation of subsequent terahertz multicomponent mixtures as well as the considerable research prospects in the field of quality testing of green tires and rubber.
