The use of non-supported ceria nanoparticles is related to difficulties in the purification of the product and the recovery and recyclability of the catalyst. Therefore, in this work, ceria nanoparticles are supported on a polymer matrix either by synthesizing polymer particles by so-called Pickering miniemulsions while using ceria nanoparticles as emulsion stabilizers or, as a comparison, byin-situcrystallization on preformed polymer particles. The former strategy presents significant advantages over the latter in terms of time and consumption of resources, and it facilitates an easier scale-up of the process. In both strategies, the incorporation of a magnetoresponsive core within the polymer matrix allows the recovery and the recycling of the catalyst by simple application of a magnetic field and offers an enhancement of the catalytic efficiency.

Myosmine has recently been suspected to be a tobacco-independent carcinogenic source. Using cell flow cytometry, we have examined the influence of myosmine on the cell cycle of murine erythroleukemia (MEL) cells in vitro and have compared this with its effects on murine bone marrow cells in vivo. Myosmine at low concentrations inhibited cell proliferation dose dependently; while at concentrations close to 300 mu mol dm(-3) it acted in a cytostatic fashion, that is, it increased the percentage of cells in the S and G2/M phases. At doses of 350-400 mu mol dm(-3) myosmine induced apoptosis and the hypoploid fraction. In vivo intraperitoneal injection of mice with 100 mg/kg of myosmine resulted in a statistically significant increase in the percentage of cells in S phase; i.e. from 13.75 to 18.22%. The percentage of bone marrow cells in the G2/M phase increased from 6.79 to 8.93 % in treated mice compared to controls. Theoretical and experimental spectroscopic data for protonated cyano-thiophenes (R-CNH+ with R = C4H3S), which are needed for their interstellar search and/or detection, are still lacking in the literature. Considering the high abundance and reactivity of H-3(+) in the interstellar medium (ISM), a quantum chemical investigation on protonated thiophene and two of its nitrile-substituted derivatives (2-cyanothiophene and 3-cyanothiophene) is undertaken for their characterization. The geometrical structures for the title species are calculated at the M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) level of theory, followed by an empirical correction for systematic errors. At the same level of theory, IR and Raman spectra are explored and the rotational parameters are calculated. The proton affinity (PA) of R-CN and the enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy changes (Delta H-r, Delta S-r and Delta(r)G) of the reactions producing R-CNH+ are computed at the G2(MP2) and G3B3 levels of theory and at different temperatures. The PA calculations show that the protonation favors the nitrogen atom, while Delta H-r, Delta S-r, and Delta(r)G reveal the spontaneous reactions producing R-CNH+ and their neutral forms. In addition, quadrupole hyperfine structures are predicted, while the region where the brightest lines fall at different temperatures is discussed. These results are expected to assist astrophysicists and astrochemists in the search for new species in the ISM.

Acid-catalyzed reactions of the hydrazido(2-) complexes cis,mer-[WX(2)(NNH2)(PMe(2)Ph)(3)] (X=Cl, Br) with phthalaldehyde gave the (phthalimidin-2-yl)imido complexes cis,mer-[WX(2)(NNCH2C6H4CO)(PMe(2)Ph)(3)], via the condensation of the terminal NH2 group with one of the formyl groups and the following cyclization to form a phthalimidine ring. Crystal structure of the chloro complex 3a was unambiguously determined by X-ray analysis.
