Assessing the Effect of Hofmeister Anions on the Hydrogen-Bonding Strength of Water via Nitrile Stretching Frequency Shift

The temperature dependence of the peak frequency (nu(max)) of the C equivalent to N stretching vibrational spectrum of a hydrogen-bonded C equivalent to N species is known to be a qualitative measure of its hydrogen-bonding strength. Herein, we show that within a two-state framework, this dependence can be analyzed in a more quantitative manner to yield the enthalpy and entropy changes (Delta H-HB and Delta S-HB) for the corresponding hydrogen-bonding interactions. Using this method, we examine the effect of ten common anions on the strength of the hydrogen-bond(s) formed between water and the C equivalent to N group of an unnatural amino acid, p-cyanophenylalanine (Phe(CN)). We find that based on the Delta H-HB values, these anions can be arranged in the following order: HPO42- > OAc- > F- > SO42- approximate to Cl- approximate to (H2O) approximate to ClO4- approximate to NO3- > Br- > SCN- approximate to I-, which differs from the corresponding Hofmeister series. Because PheCN has a relatively small size, the finding that anions having very different charge densities (e.g., SO42- and ClO4-) act similarly suggests that this ranking order is likely the result of specific ion effects. Since proteins contain different backbone and side-chain units, our results highlight the need to assess their individual contributions toward the overall Hofmeister effect in order to achieve a microscopic understanding of how ions affect the physical and chemical properties of such macromolecules. In addition, the analytical method described in the present study is applicable for analyzing the spectral evolution of any vibrational spectra composed of two highly overlapping bands.

Nitronyl nitroxides (NitR) are a family of persistent radicals widely used in molecular magnetism and recently suggested as potential candidates for spintronic applications. In this paper we characterize by X-and W-band Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy the new radical S-4-(nitronyl nitroxide) benzyl ethanethioate (NitSAc) designed for assembling on Au surfaces. We determined the radical magnetic tensors and studied by X-band pulse EPR its spin relaxation behaviour in fluid and glassy solutions of toluene. A comparison with the well known nitroxide 3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrrolin-1-oxyl (CTPO) is afforded. The advantages of using NitSAc in technological applications are discussed on the basis of the slow spin relaxation demonstrated by this study.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) was used to investigate the Tempyo spin label (3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrrolin-1-yloxy) as a report group for the interactions and the conformational changes of lyophilized bovine serum albumin (BSA) and bovine hemoglobin (BH), as function of pH values in the range 2.5-11. The EPR spectra are similar with those of other non-covalently spin label porphyrins in frozen solution at very low temperatures. This behavior indicated a possible spin-spin interaction between the hemic iron and the nitroxide group. The changes in the EPR spectra as function of the pH are discussed in terms of conformational changes of the proteins. Spectral simulations and magnetic EPR parameters reveal the following: (i) one single paramagnetic species, with Gaussian line shape, was used for the best fits of experimental spectra in the case of serum albumin samples; and (ii) a weighted sum of Lorentzian and Gaussian line shape in the case of hemoglobin samples. The representation of correlation time vs. pH, reveals a dependence of degree of immobilization of spin label on the conformational changes of proteins in acidic and basic environment. The friction and wear behavior of coated rubber components is strongly dependent on the substrate properties. This work deals with the impact of the crosslink density, i.e., the hardness of the rubber substrate on the tribological performance of uncoated and coated rubber. The hardness of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) is varied altering the sulfur content. Both the uncoated and coated rubber samples are characterized in terms of surface and mechanical properties. Tribological tests comprise the examination of the macroscopic contact area and the temperature in the contact zone. It was found that the functional layer enhances the wear resistance significantly. Apparently, the wear and friction behavior of the coated rubber correlates with the hardness and the bulk properties of the substrate material.
